Whalers and sealers have been in the South Island of New Zealand since the mid 1700’s, some abandoning the whale stations and choosing to live in the nearby villages.

Their presence has huge influence on the changing culture of the Maori. Tribal warfare throughout the country has escalated, as more Maori see personal benefit in owning and selling land.

Te Ao Huri and his band of musket warriors have made their way from the North to the South - word of their campaign of slaughter has reached the village of Matuku Moana and the people of the village, the Kati Noho, are worried by their threats.
